Denver Zoo welcomed the birth of an endangered, Grevy's (Greh-veez) zebra. At just over day old the unnamed foal, whose gender is still not known, is still trying to figure out how to use its long, wobbly legs and rarely ventures more than a few feet away from its mother, Crestone. Guests can see mom and foal with the entire herd in the yard now.
There are three different species of zebra; plains or common zebra, mountain zebra and Grevy's zebra. Grevy's zebra were named for Jules Grevy, a former president of France, to whom the first known specimen of the animal was sent in 1882. The largest of all wild equine species, they can be can be distinguished from other zebras by their longer legs, more narrow stripes, white, stripeless underbellies and large rounded ears.

We marvel at their raw speed. We watch their daring moves and nerves of steel as they fight for position with awe. We gasp at their handling skills. They are the sprinters. And for six days they have been fighting over mountains trying to stay with racers 20 or more pounds lighter. They have flirted with thin air and time cuts, but today belongs to them. The Denver Circuit takes the best parts of the 2011 and 2012 Denver stages and combines them into a new circuit. It still hits all the Denver highlights – LoDo, City Park, Civic Center Park. There isn’t a bad viewing spot.

The museum is located at 17155 West 44th Ave. in Golden, CO, and the free train day runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. A free train ride is provided, weather permitting.
In 2012, extensive restoration efforts were completed on the city's historic engine and rail cars, which include locomotive #30, Rio Grande Southern caboose #04990 and Denver and Rio Grande Western coach #280. These historic train assets were originally purchased in the 1950s by residents of Boulder, led by University of Colorado professor and Boulder historian John B. Schoolland. The City of Boulder has an agreement with the CRRM that the train will be on display at the museum for up to 10 years.
For free entry into the museum, adults will need to provide proof of an address inside the city limits of Boulder with a photo of identification. For more information, call Carey Sager, Parks and Recreation Department, 303-441-3858. For more information about the CRRM, visit www.ColoradoRailroadMuseum.org.
