The Denver Zoo posted the following on their Facebook page Thursday:
Bismarck, a beloved male California sea lion at Denver Zoo passed away under anesthesia on August 22. He was believed to be about five years old. Since his arrival he had been an ambassador to the physically challenged as he was missing his back flippers yet adapted to swim just as easily as the zoo’s other sea lions.
The post went on to say:
“This was a very surprising loss and our hearts go out to the zookeepers that worked with Bismarck every day,” says Vice President of Veterinary Medicine Scott Larsen. “It is always difficult to lose an animal, especially one as amazing as Bismarck, but to lose one during a medical procedure that was intended to help him is especially hard.”
