Boulder, Colorado Named a 'Tree City USA' for 29th Year

Living in Colorado, we seem to be known for outdoor activities. From skiing in the winter to hiking and cycling in the spring and summer, and our great outdoors. Congrats to Boulder, for being named a 'Tree City USA' for the 29th year in-a-row!

Boulder has been named “Tree City USA” for the 29th consecutive year by the National Arbor Day Foundation, in honor of the city’s commitment to community forestry.  The city’s Parks and Recreation Department Urban Forestry Division celebrates the Arbor Day season with a children’s art exhibit and tree plantings, planned for April 15 through May 18.

Boulder is planning several events for Arbor Day (Earth Day) coming up April 22



Monday, April 15, through Friday, April 26
  • Children’s artwork celebrating Arbor Day will be on display in the Children’s Library at the Main Boulder Public Library, 1001 Arapahoe Ave. The artwork was created by Whittier International Elementary School fifth-grade students.

March through May   
  • Parks and Recreation Forestry Division is planting approximately 150 trees in city parks.
  • Parks and Recreation Forestry Division is planting more than 150 trees in street rights-of-way in both residential and commercial sites throughout the city.
  • Parks and Recreation Forestry Division and Public Works Department-Transportation Division is planting more than 30 new trees along the Foothills Parkway, Baseline Road and Greenbriar Boulevard medians.

Wednesday, April 17
  • 9 to 10:30 a.m. – 71 students from the Whittier International Elementary School will plant 10 trees in Canyon Park, 2035 Canyon Blvd.

Saturday, April 27
  • 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. – Parks and Recreation Forestry Division and volunteers from the Boulder Yamagata Sakura Project will plant 30 Somai Yoshino cherry trees (donated by the Yamagata Sakura Project) at Harlow Platts Park located at 1360 Gillaspie Drive. The trees will be planted around Viele Lake. The public is welcome.

Saturday, May 18  
  • 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. – Parks and Recreation Forestry Division and volunteers will plant 10 trees at Harlow Platts Park as part of Community Cleanup Day.
  • 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.- Parks and Recreation will host the first annual Boulder Community Day at the East Boulder Community Center, 5660 Sioux Drive. Events include the Center for Resource Conservation plant sale, Water Conservation Fair and National Kids to Parks Day free activities.
  • Are you water wise? Get tips, hands-on presentations and resources for saving water.
  • City Forester Kathleen Alexander will give a presentation on trees and drought.
  • Tree planting demonstrations will take place at 11 a.m. and at 1 p.m.
