If you grew up in Denver then you know the name Charley Martin,,part of the famous radio team of Hal & Charley. Remember the soap opera...Pomp & Circumstances?....very funny. They owned Denver radio in the 70's and 80's, two of the greatest guys you will ever know. I had the honor of working with them for 10 years at KHOW..some of the best years of my career. Charley passed last Friday after a long illness, he was creative...funny and caring. Many of you have asked about a service honoring him, as of now I don't know of one...but stayed tuned. In the mean time ...Charley rest in peace my friend.
I arrived in '68 from Iowa. Worked in retail sales for 6 mo.at the Denver Dry and got my first real job with City and County of Denver . I really enjoyed listening to Charley and Barney. They were so funny and "lifted" everyone's spirits driving in to work. I was unhappy when they parted but having Hal and Charley together was just as much fun and I was proud of that Iowa connection! People forget Hal and Charley started the "Parade of Lights" in Denver. And if they didn't start it they made it twice the fun, just appearing in it! Once my husband and I went to an Iowa Reunion Party that Hal and Charley organized. They ordered "Tenderloins" and "Maidrites" shipped in from Iowa along with corn and Hiland Potato Chips. Wow you can't get much better than that!!! -A home away from home. ( I met someone there who had met her husband in my grandfather's restaurant in Iowa.) In later years listening to Charley converse with Hal every Fri on 950 AM was great fun! Those recordings may still be available. Charley was part of a great team! The memories are all we have, but what "fun" ones they are!!! Thanks Charley! I can't help but smile while remembering. Kandy Maharas
